Lot Essay

It was in the late 1940s that the artist's work moved into a phase of sculptural monuments and presences. The present work presages the standing forms that were to occupy the artist in the early 1950s.

Noel Barber, to whom the present work was given as a gift, was a journalist for the Daily Mail. He was a close friend of the artist whose house at Menton, was close to the Barber's home at Cap d'Ail.
