Lot Essay

During the latter part of 1948, Heron and his wife Delia, travelled to Provence, where they stayed with Francis Davison and Margaret Mellis at Le Chäteau des Enfants, Cap d'Antibes. During this visit Heron painted a number of works, which showed a strong Matissean influence (see M. Gooding, Patrick Heron, London, 1994, p. 66). The present drawing depicts Golfe Juan, a small seaside resort, which is situated in the centre of a large natural harbour stretching from Cap d'Antibes to the East, to the Cap de la Croisette to the West, on the outskirts of Cannes.
