Lot Essay

In 1930, Spencer stayed a number of times with the Principal of St John's College, Oxford, Austin Lane Pool and his wife Vera, in various houses in the Cotswolds. In his memoirs, the painter recalled that the family, 'seemed to adopt the habits of Michaelmas hirelings by changing houses no less than four times. The family moved like farm labourers, piling all their belongings into a wagon' (see G. Spencer, Memoirs of a Painter, London, 1974, p. 70).
