Lot Essay

After 1907, Bevan, besides staying with his in-laws, visited his brother-in-law, Stanislawa Rytel at Mydlow near Opatow Kielecki in southern Poland, the subject of the present composition. A larger work with two figures and two cattle, The Farm Gate, Mydlow, was sold at Christie's, London, 19 November 2004, lot 80. Another picture, The Yard Gate, Mydlow, Poland is in the collection of Ulster Museum, Belfast and shows Bevan's divisionist technique.

We are very grateful to Patrick Baty for his assistance in preparing the catalogue entry for this and the following lot.
