Lot Essay

The present work is a study for Butler's cancelled commission for the Crystal Palace Recreational Centre. The London County Council withdrew their commission for a sculpture on the grounds that his proposal to erect a large female nude was wholly out of keeping with its surroundings (see R. Calvocoressi (intro.), exhibition catalogue, Reg Butler, London, Tate Gallery, 1983, pp. 12-13).
