Warre--Vintage 1963
Damaged embossed wax capsules, some with remains of capsules only. Lot 15 levels two base of neck, two upper, one mid/upper, one mid, two mid/low and one low-shoulder. Lots 16 to 22 levels into neck. Lot 23 levels: seven into neck and five base of neck, four with slight signs of seepage
Tasting Note: Despite a shaky start (in 1965) and a dozen slightly variable notes through the 1970s, for me this is now one of the best and most elegant of all the '63s. I have made a total of sixteen notes since the early 1980s when it emerged, fully fledged and totally delicious.
Only half a dozen noted in the 1990s, the most useful at the two Symington tastings in 1994 and 1996, each time alongside the Graham and Dow. Warre looked the most mature of the three and had lost quite a bit of colour, particularly in magnum; very fragrant, harmonious, touch of spice, cloves, tangerine; stylish, beautifully balanced, gentle acidity. Last tasted, showing well at Hal Lewis's superb 'Mr Gourmet' dinner in Memphis, Tennessee, Sept 1999 **** Now - 2015. M.B.
