Believed Bual--1792 Blandy. Lot 43: Three-part moulded bottle. Intact plain green wax capsule. Remains of label "L" visible, as is "-92" in bottom centre of label and "-40" on bottom right. No vintage shown, believed to be Blandy's Bual 1792. Level very top-shoulder. Lot 44: Hand-blown bottle. Plain wax capsule reapplied at some point. Remains of label, "B" just visible, no vintage shown, believed to be Blandy's Bual 1792 Tasting note: Madeira, Vintage 1792. Bottled by Blandy, 1840. HMS Northumberland called for provisions in Funchal on 7 August 1815 with Napoleon on board en route to his exile on St Helena, following his defeat at Waterloo a few months earlier. A pipe of Madeira of the 1792 vintage was purchased, but neither paid for nor broached. After Napoleon's death, the cask was returned to Madeira and bottled by Blandy. Though a good, rich, amber colour, the wine had dried out but the flavour was still intriguing and the wine very drinkable. Tasted at the Madeira Wine Association's (Blandy and associated companies) 'Wine Library' in England, Dec 1983 ***' - M.B. It is now very rare
