Lot Essay

Thematically related to Giulio's drawings of giochi di putti, executed as designs for tapestries for Federico Gonzaga. The tapestries were carried out by Nicola Karcher before 1545. The subjects of Giulio's drawings are taken from the Imagines by Philostratus, showing putti playing, dancing, fishing, or harvesting fruits under elaborate arches arranged in a certain rhythm, comparable to drawings exhibited in Mantua, Palazzo Te, Giulio Romano, 1989, pp. 474-79.
