It was back in 1605 that the monks of the Chartreuse de Vauvert first took possession of the mysterious manuscript which held the secrets of this famous liqueur made from a curious cocktail of herbs and plants.
During this period, Only a few monks and even fewer apothecaries understood the use of herbs and plants and indeed to this day, this "Elixir of Long Life" is still made only by Chartreuse monks. In 1903, the Chartreuse distillery was nationalized by the French government and with this the monks fled to Spain. The Chartreuse monks soon settled and created a new distillery in the town of Tarragona. The bottles offered in this catalogue come from this period and can be dated between 1903 and 1918. It is believed that Cesar Ritz himself supported the monk's cause and bought significant stocks. Indeed, today the cellar of the Ritz Paris boasts a collection of over 100 bottles.
