Mary Newcome pointed out that this is a Modello for the central compartment of a ceiling with scenes from Tasso's Gerusalemme Liberata in Villa Scassi at Sampierdarena, in the outskirts of Genoa, M. Newcome, Bernardo Castello's Later Frescoes and Some Preliminary Drawings, 'The Burlington Magazine', CXVI, 1976, pp. 301-5, figs. 50 and 54. In the early 1620s Castello, who was to die in 1629, received a number of major decorative commissions, for which he resorted to ideas embodied in his earlier representations of scenes from Tasso's epic poem.
