This is a modello for the picture painted by Lomi for the altar of the Biuzzi family in Santa Maria del Carmine, Florence, P. Carofano and M.C. Galassi, Aurelio Lomi, Pisa, 1989, no. 60, pl. LXXXIX.
The altar was erected in 1595 but the altarpiece probably dates from later in Lomi's career: the angels in the upper section of the altarpiece are found nearly unchanged in a picture of Michele Pini receiving the crown from Christ (M.C. Galassi, op. cit., no. 72, pl. 34) in the Pisa museum, painted in 1619.
There are few changes in the final painting compared to the modello: the central and foreground figures are the same but all the other figures were slightly shifted. The balustrade in the center has been replaced by a flower pot.
