Francis Russell, in his 1973 article, dates the drawing to the second part of the 1610s, adding that the iconography of Saint Louis of Toulouse is quite rare in Italian 17th Century painting. Guercino depicted the Saint in another altarpiece, The Madonna and Child with Saint Joseph, Saint Augustine, Saint Louis, Saint Francis and a Child Donor, painted in 1616 for the Church of Saint Agustine in Cento and now in the Muse des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, L. Salerno, I Dipinti del Guercino, Rome, 1988, no. 27.
