RESURRECTION, historiated initial on a leaf from an Antiphonal, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT CHOIRBOOK ON VELLUM
[Italy, ?15th century and ?17th century]450 x 360mm. Five lines written in black ink between music of square notation on four-line staves of red, rubrics in red, a large blue initial with red penwork on the recto.
The initial has staves of blue with extensive fleshy foliage of blue and green with rust-red and yellow turn-backs spreading across the outer and upper margin, the ground is burnished gold. Within the initial, Christ rises from the tomb in a blaze of light, waking the reclining soldiers, his mantle billowing and his standard unfurling. The script looks to be 15th-century but the initial appears to have been painted later, the soldiers' armour looking 17th-century, and the painter to have provided a rather hybrid form for the initial A to open the antiphon for lauds on Easter Sunday, 'Angelus autem domini descendit'.
