ALBUM AMICORUM of Johann Baptist SCHNIZER. Manuscript on paper and vellum, South Germany, 1617-1647 (the great majority of entries Ingolstadt, 1617-23), including approximately 72 blazoned coats of arms, 4 other miniatures and 4 engravings showing the continents by Heinrich Ullrich, and one other, some images tipped or pasted in, marbled endpapers and 9 other marbled leaves, altogether approximately 137 leaves (including 60 blanks), oblong 8vo (95 x 155mm), modern pencil foliation (general light soiling, ff.129-131 detached), contemporary blind-stamped sheep (rebacked, rubbed, spine worn). Provenance: armorial ex-libris and shelfmark (Ms.729) of Rudolf Ritter von Gutmann; shelfmark (Ser.nov. 2970), library stamps and de-accession stamp of Österreichische Nationalbibliothek.
The miniatures include a costume-book illustration on vellum (tipped in) of four ladies (f.17v), a remarkable and delicately-rendered scene of a knight confronting a crystal sphere, from within which two arms emerge aiming a bow and arrow, an arrow-bearing dragon above (f.21), a youth spearing a wild boar, with a group of alarmed huntsmen behind (f.23), and Actaeon and the bathing nymphs (f.104v).
