THE BOOK OF KELLS -- Evangeliorum Quattuor Codex Cenannensis. Bern: Urs Graf-Verlag, 1950-1951. 3 volumes, 2° (400 x 300mm). 48 mounted colour plates and numerous full-page monochrome illustrations. Plate volumes bound in original gilt vellum by Otto Walter Ltd, the upper covers and spines decorated in gilt and black, text volume in original vellum-backed boards with uniform spine.
NUMBER 288 OF A LIMITED EDITION OF 500 COPIES. A fine facsimile edition of The Book of Kells. The text volume includes an introduction by Dr E.H. Alton, 'Notes on the Art and Ornament...' by Dr P. Meyer, and a 'Collation of the Text with the Vulgate...' by Dr G.O. Simms. Provenance: The Library of William Foyle (bookplate), sold in these rooms, 11 July 2000, lot 95. (3)
