EINSTEIN, Albert (1879-1955). Two autograph postcards signed ('Papa') to his eldest son, Hans Albert, [Berlin], 21 September 1914 and 25 December 1915, together 2 pages, oblong 8vo, one on a picture postcard showing a street in Prague.
THE PAINS OF SEPARATION: when Mileva and Einstein's children left Berlin for Zurich at the end of the school term in summer 1914, Hans Albert had assumed that they would be returning in September at the end of the holidays. In fact it was the beginning of the end of his parents' marriage: in the first of these poignant cards, Einstein promises to pack up the possessions that Hans Albert had left behind in Berlin, and tells him to write every two weeks, 'I will send regular replies'. The second card expresses his delight with a recent photograph of Hans Albert and 'the little Zuricher', 'every now and then I take it out of my wallet and look at it', though his son must be patient about seeing him: 'I am too tired for so much to-ing and fro-ing, have only a little time and am worried about the considerable expense [of a visit to Zurich]: I shall look after you all the more in April'.
