LAWRENCE, David Herbert (1885-1930). Autograph letter signed (with initials 'D.H.L.') to his sister-in-law, Else Jaffe, Villa Mirenda, Scandicci, Florence, 11 January 1928, one page, large 4to.
'MY IMPROPER & PHALLIC NOVEL'. Lawrence reports the conclusion of the final version of Lady Chatterley's Lover: 'I have done my most improper & phallic novel again -- now call it Tenderness. I think I shall publish it privately here in Florence when we get back from Switzerland in March'; the letter also looks forward to a change of scene -- the Lawrences are off to Switzerland to 'join the Huxleys at Diablerets ... enough of Italy' -- and thanks Else for some rose-leaf: 'Was I to eat it, because I'm a Golden Ass? Plenty of Ass, but not much gold!'.
Published in the Letters, ed. J.T. Boulton & M.H. Boulton with G.M. Lacey (1991), no.4257.
