NAPOLEON I -- FAMILY. A collection of 13 letters by (or to) members of the Imperial family, including:
his mother MARIA LETIZIA. Letter signed ('Madame') to family members, Rome, 2 January 1825, planning the marriage of her granddaughter Charlotte to Napoleon Louis, the son of Louis Bonaparte, 1½ pages, 4to;
his brothers JOSEPH (document signed, 1804, and autograph letter signed, 1838), LUCIEN (document signed as Minister of the Interior, 1800), LOUIS (letter signed to Marshal Moncey, 1804) and JEROME (document signed as Napoleon III's president of the senate, 1853);
his sisters PAULINE (autograph letter signed to her brother Lucien, Rome, n.d.) and CAROLINE (document signed jointly with her husband Joachim MURAT, 1806, appointing her procurator fiscal); with a letter addressed to his other sister, Elisa ('Madame', 1809); and a document signed by Pauline's first husband, Charles Leclerc;
his second wife MARIE LOUISE (autograph letter signed, Parma, 1841, complaining of health problems and the Italians' refusal to believe in contagion);
and two autograph letters signed by his mother's half-brother, Cardinal Joseph Fesch (1803 and 1813).
Napoleon's appointed members of his family to positions of prominence across Europe: Joseph was king of Spain before fleeing to America after 1815; Louis was king of Holland, Jerome of Westphalia; Napoleon had his scandalous sister Pauline married to a respected general, Leclerc, in 1797 to attempt to conceal her numerous affairs; at his death she married Prince Borghese. Napoleon's second wife, Marie Louise, daughter of the Austrian Emperor, found herself wife of a non-person at Napoleon's fall, and was recompensed with a specially-created duchy of Parma, Piacenza and Guastalla.
