Chancery 2° (280 x 206mm). Collation: aa-bb8 (aa1r prologue, text, bb7r colophon, bb7v-8 blank). 15 leaves (of 16, without final blank). 41 lines. Type: 1b:90G. One- to 5-line initials and paragraph marks in red, yellow capital strokes. (Narrow stain in top margins, some light spotting.) Early 20th-century calf-backed boards (rubbed, worn at extremities). Provenance: Society of St. John the Evangelist (bookplate).

Third edition of a popular meditative guide. The Alphabetum is "a concise compendium of mystical approaches to God from the beginning of Christianity up to the fifteenth century" (Ford, BPH, 10), drawn from Anselm, ps-Dionysius, Augustine, Benedict, Gregory, Jerome, Gerson and others.
