Provenance: Jacques-Auguste de Thou (1554-1617; binding) -- later manuscript shelf-mark and note (front endpapers).
First and best edition of this important compilation of historical sources pertaining to Germany and the Alsace, many previously unpublished, for the period 1050 to 1400. BOUND FOR THE GREAT BIBLIOPHILE AND HISTORIAN JACQUES-AUGUSTE DE THOU. Magistrate, politician, diplomat, historian and bibliophile, De Thou assembled the best book collection of his age (Olivier). In 1593 he was named 'grand maître' of the Bibliothèque royale (for which he acquired all of Catherine de Medici's manuscripts), and in 1595 president of the Parlement de Paris. The book was probably bound before 1587 when De Thou married and adopted a supralibros combining his arms with his wife's. Adams G-494; BL STC German 928.
