HORAE, use of Rome, in Latin and French. Paris: Guillaume Anabat for Gilles and Germain Hardouin, n.d. [not before 1505; calendar for 1500-1520].
PRINTED ON VELLUM, 8° (196 x 125mm). Collation: A-O8 P4. 115 leaves (of 116, lacking O2, with Flagellation metalcut) leaves. Type: 94B. 15 (of 16) large metalcuts, metalcut anatomical man, full-page publisher's device, 33 small cuts, large cuts within architectural frame, all other pages with composite metalcut ornamental and historiated border, all large and small cuts, and borders in first quire, illuminated by a contemporary hand, liquid gold initials, paragraph marks and line-filler painted on alternate pink or blue ground, ruled in red. (Borders trimmed.) 19th-century vellum, gilt edges (a little spotted); marbled paper slipcase. Provenance: armorial shield on printer's device over-painted with a portcullis -- "Bibliothecae Nicolfourgensis" (17th-century inscription) -- A. Grienberger (clipped signature) -- Rudolf Gutmann (bookplate).
The present edition has 15 of the eventual full complement of 18 metalcuts in the series, which derives from the workshop of Jean Pichore. It may be dated to c.1506: the first dated use of the Hardouin device was in 1505, and from 1507 the cuts were copied by Vérard and the Hardouin changed the years in the almanac. Of the 4 copies listed by Tenschert-Nettekoven (Horae, no. 68), 3 are incomplete. Adams L-1006; Bohatta 713; Copinger II, 3075 (BL. C.29.h.11); not in Lacombe.
