MILTON, John (1608-1674). Poems both English and Latin, compos'd at several times. London: Ruth Raworth for Humphrey Moseley, 1645.

2 parts in one volume, 8° (151 x 93mm). Engraved portrait frontispiece, section-title to 'Comus' and part-title to Latin poems. (A few leaves with repairs, mostly in margins, frontispiece with facsimile in the last line of the caption, a few page numbers just trimmed, last leaf with inside margin repaired and laid-down, without front blank.) Full red morocco gilt by Rivière and Son, gilt turn-ins, edges gilt (front hinge just starting). Provenance: Samuel F. Barger (bookplate, dated '1895').

FIRST COLLECTED EDITION OF MILTON'S POEMS, with the engraved frontispiece portrait -- THE FIRST PUBLISHED PORTRAIT OF MILTON. With the exception of 'On Shakespeare', 'Comus', and 'Lycidas', none of these pieces had been published previously, and the volume contains all of Milton's poetry written up to this date, apart from only 'two or three lesser pieces' (Pforzheimer). The title-page of this edition is known in two states: in the first (as here), the last line reads 'Arms in Pauls Church-yard. 1645' and in the second it reads 'Arms in S. Pauls Church-yard. 1645'. Wing M-2160; Grolier Wither to Prior 572; Pforzheimer 722; Shawcross 70.
