DOVES BINDERY -- Aucassin and Nicolete, translated by Andrew Lang. London: Chiswick Press, Charles Whittingham and Co. for David Nutt, 1887.
12° (158 x 94mm). Additional title and text printed in red and black. Engraved frontispiece by P.J. Hood, additional-title-border and head- and tailpieces after Hood. Gilt blue morocco by the Doves Bindery signed in gilt on the rear lower turn-in 'THE · DOVES · BINDERY 18 C-S 97', boards covered with small rose-leaf tools enclosed by borders of rose-leaf sprays and tudor rose tools on a pointillé ground, gilt turn-ins with cornerpieces of rose-leaf tools, spine gilt in compartments, lettered in 2 and dated at the foot, other compartments with small and large rose-leaf tools, gilt edges (spine very slightly faded and rubbed). Provenance: J. Philip Jacobs (his sale, Sotheby's London, 17 November 1999, lot 389).
ONE OF 550 COPIES ON JAPANESE PAPER IN A FINE DOVES BINDING. As Tidcombe notes, this binding is based on a design executed in 1889 on another copy of this edition of Aucassin and Nicolete (which was re-used by Cobden-Sanderson on a third copy in 1892), but it employs a different design for the boards (a symmetrical arrangement of rose-leaves) and the spine is decorated differently and titled in 2 panels, rather than down the length of the spine. Tidcombe Doves Bindery DBX6b.
