ARCHIBALD THORBURN (1860-1935) From an early age Archibald Thorburn possessed a passion for drawing and sketching studies of wildlife. One of the first British wildlife artists to go into the field and take sketches from life, it was his experience, knowledge and direct observation from nature that was to separate his work from his contemporaries, who were still taking their studies from inanimate examples that had suffered at the hands of taxidermists. It was this that helped make him, as his pupil George Lodge proclaimed, 'the greatest ornithological artist, superior to all his contemporaries in the same field'. Finding watercolour the most expressive medium with which to capture the immediacy of nature, the present lots aptly illustrate the qualities that Thorburn is both admired and collected for: an unfettered combination of animation and aestheticism, with a lucid unsentimental knowledge and understanding of wildlife.
