The annotated date, '1882.9', indicates that Leader retouched the painting six years after its original execution, probably at the request of the then owner.
Stonehall Common lies approximately three miles south of the village of Whittington where Leader resided from the early 1860s until he moved to Surrey in 1889. There are many isolated hamlets, such as that depicted, dotted throughout the Vale of Evesham. The picture compares to two major Royal Academy exhibits: February Fill Dyke (1881) and "In the evening there shall be light" (1882), which also show the effects of light on water-logged land. These views mark a departure for Leader who had previously only used traditional subjects such as rivers, ponds and lakes to demonstrate the way reflected light illuminates its surroundings.
