1951 LINCOLN COSMOPOLITAN CONVERTIBLE

In 1949 Lincoln completely changed direction, producing a dramatically reshaped car based on the newer and more adaptable Mercury chassis. The top of the line model was now named the Cosmopolitan, a strong reflection of the luxury division's self image. Powered by a substantial flathead V8 engine of 337 cubic inches, the new Lincolns lent themselves to competition, winning several NASCAR races in 1949 and 1950. Offering more than ample performance, these tasteful convertibles featured high quality interiors with a wide array of amenities.
After long months of extensive planning and testing, Lincoln debuted its innovative automatic transmission on the 1951 line of cars. This new feature offered added convenience that had previously been unavailable on its cars. Though the overall styling on the models remained largely unchanged, small improvements such as a new grill, wheel covers, headlamps, body trim and ornamentation were implemented on the 1951 model line. Impressively, the bodies utilized the cold riveted and welded style of construction versus the all welded construction of previous years. At a cost of nearly $4,500 the Cosmopolitan was slated for the top of the market, conveying its owner's financial success and astute taste.
The Lincoln Cosmopolitan Convertible on offer here is a nicely restored example of these rare and sublimely understated cars. Finished in a lovely mocha brown with tan leather, this Lincoln has been very well maintained by the current owner. The engine bay and motor appear to be in very presentable overall condition. The car is complete with a variety of amenities including air conditioning, spotlamps, radio and power windows. This 1951 Cosmopolitan is also quite rare as only 857 were built and are therefore sought after.
