Lot Essay

Professor Marcel Roethlisberger dates the drawing to 1630-5 and compares the style to the slightly smaller 'early sketchbook' datable to the early 1630s and discussed by Roethlisberger under nos. 1-38.
The same farmhouse appears sketched in wash in the background of a drawing at the British Museum, M. Roethlisberger, op. cit., no. 13 illustrated.
