Lot Essay

This drawing is related to the decoration of the dome of the Church of the Invalides in Paris and could be a study for one of the angels at the foot of the cross to the left of Saint Louis. This type of angel also appears in the pendentives. La Fosse worked on the cupola for nearly thirty years, from 1677 to 1706, but this drawing probably dates from the later part of the decoration, circa 1700.
Another drawing related to that project was in the Normand Collection sold at Christie's Monaco, 20 June 1994, lot 48.
We are grateful to Joanne Hedley for confirming the attribution and providing the information for the present lot.
