Lot Essay

The present drawing, annotated by Richard de Saint-Non, was executed by Fragonard in July 1761 when he was travelling in Italy with the Abb de Saint-Non. It is after the famous picture by Ludovico Carracci, then in the Certosini di San Girolamo, now in the Pinacoteca, Bologna. Another drawing also made on this trip was sold at Christie's London, 5 December 1997, lot 205.
The inscription is by Richard de Saint-Non, as Fragonard hardly knew how to write.
