Lot Essay

The watercolor of this drawing was added by Robert over an etching based on a design by Panini. Panini's drawing of the same composition, dating from the 1730s, was sold at Christie's London, 3 April 1995, lot 76. The liveliness of the coloring and the expression of the figure in this drawing differ from Panini's work and are typical of Robert. Robert introduced many minor changes to his composition by covering the etched outlines with watercolor. Panini was the first source of inspiration for Robert when he worked in Rome.
