Lot Essay

The inscription on the verso recounts, in allegorical terms, how the Grand Duke Paul Petrovitch travelling in France under the name of Comte du Nord visited numerous artist's studios and scientists to complete the education received from his mother, Emperor Catherine II of Russia. Dugourc in his autobiography claims that the Grand Duke invited him to come to Russia but he declined the invitation as he had only recently married. But to thank him he executed the present drawing with his brother-in-law Blanger. The inscription adds that the drawing was engraved in 48 hours but the sudden departure of 'this illustrious traveller' prevented him from receiving the print from the hands of the artists. The last line explains that the drawing could not reach Russia because of wars and troubles in Europe. The print is subtitled 'Tlmque conduit par Minerve voit Salente les beaux-arts rassembls'. Telemachus is identified as the Grand Duke and Minerva Catherine II.
