Lot Essay

Thomas, 7th Earl of Elgin (Minister Plenipotentiary to the Porte) stayed with Sir William Hamilton, the then Ambassador to the Kingdom of Naples, on his way to Constantinople in 1799, and was advised by him in his choice of artists for his archeological expedition to Greece. Lord Elgin consequently acquired a number of drawings by contemporary artists working in Naples and Rome, including a number of drawings by Lallemand. A group of these were sold at Christie's, 10 July 1962 and 6 July 1965, lots 94-100.
