Vincent received the Prix de Rome in 1768 and left for Rome in 1771, returning to France only in 1775. In Rome he drew a large number of caricatures of his fellow artists, the largest number of which are now in the Atger Museum in Montpellier. One of these represents Lemonnier wearing a wig and with prominent eyebrows and lips, similar to those in the present drawing.
Lemonnier won the Prix de Rome for History Painting in 1772, and arrived in Rome on the 30 November 1774, exactly eleven months before Vincent's departure for Paris. Vincent drew at least six other caricatures of Lemonnier, four of which are at Montpellier and two at Rouen, P. Rosenberg and A. Schnapper, Choix de dessins anciens, exhib. cat., Bibliothque Municipale de Rouen, Rouen, 1970, no. 51, illustrated.
