Lot Essay

A drawing from the same series, also dated 1774, is in the Alenon Museum, J.-F. Mjans in Dessins du Muse d'Alenon du XVIe au XIX Sicle, exhib. cat, Alenon, 1981, no. 53, illustrated.
Suve won the Prix de Rome in 1774, against David, and stayed in Rome until 1778. He returned the the Acadmie de France in 1801 to become its director.
