Lot Essay

Henri Auguste was the son of the goldsmith Robert-Joseph Auguste, born in 1759. In 1785 he took over from his father and was quickly very successful. Baron Grard painted him in 1795 with his family. He executed numerous commissions for Emperor Napoleon, as well as the tiara of Pope Pius VII. A bad manager, he went bankrupt in 1809 and fled to England. He died, a poor man, seven years later at Port-au-Prince.
