Clark Gable
A collection of autograph letters and telegrams from Clark Gable to his wife, Kay, the majority signed Pa, various dates, 1954, the letters mostly written from filming locations giving a fascinating insight into Gable's opinions of his co-stars, his filming schedule at that time and his deep affection for his wife, the letters include:
- two letters circa 1954, written in Durango, Mexico on the set of The Tall Men, one letter telling Kay This is my first letter to you, have been trying to get everything going here...the local Cow men have held the top cards to the extent of settling on a price for four thousand head of cattle and then changing it...some of the cows they brought in are so skinny they can hardly walk - when they start to shoot the stampede, that is really going to be something. Raoul [Walsh] as a director is one of the best and I like the way he goes - certainly made no mistake in that dept...we're really going along at a hell of a pace and I'm very pleased with everything needless to say I miss you...will think a hell of a long time before taking any more of these damn location pictures...Chasin just phoned to say the Warner Bros. picture is on again [probably Band Of Angels] to be done in January next year so that will be at home. Also have closed the deal for Last Man On Wagon Mound which will also be made in the studio so it looks like we will have no more of this going away business... Jane Russell seems like a very nice person but have also seen very little of her as have been working mostly with Cameron Mitchell...5pp., the other letter expressing his exasperation with the film The big wigs are beginning to move in - such as Sid Rogell the Production Manager at Twentieth arrived today - what the hell for I'll never know, as he can add not a damn thing - everyone wants to get into the act. All we need now is Hawks to complete the picture of inefficiency. It's hotter than a fiddler's bitch here today and they tell me this is nothing...6pp.;
- six autograph letters written during the filming of Soldier Of Fortune in Hong Kong, the accompanying mailing envelopes frank-marked 20 November - 12 December, 1954, the letters written on Peninsula Hotel, Kowloon, Hong Kong headed stationery, including: a letter dated Friday, telling Kay Have spent the entire day looking for locations - both on the water and on land...we have already been shooting, picking up a few background shots, and also some trucking scenes of me walking along through the docks and through the streets...2pp.; a letter dated Wed telling Kay how much he misses her ...have found out since leaving you the testosterone is completely nil - you were right, it's not that I need - but you... and expressing his boredom with filming ...I'm through with this one picture as I find it a pretty boring job...guess I'm getting old although I don't feel old. Maybe I'm plain bored with pictures... 3pp.; a letter telling Kay of his return travel plans and about a recent party: Went to Ava Gardner's cocktail party and I must say, like all those Publicity Hounds, it was a shambles..., 2pp;
- and an autograph note written in pencil Sweetheart - when you ask your lover to lunch you should be on time. Have to run my sweet, see you to-nite behind the barn, love me, the reverse inscribed in Gable's hand Mrs Gable (by hand), 1p.; accompanied by a presentation book My Durango Diary, the hand-made book compiled by an unknown cast member during the filming of The Tall Men, 1954 in Durango, Mexico, containing a humorous account and sketches of Gable's time in Durango, the diary commencing Since you can't remember a god-damn thing - here's your Durango Diary..., 28pp. (14)
