Related to the portrait of the Comtesse d'Agoult exhibited at the Salon of 1843 and now at the Muse Carnavalet, Paris, F. Folliot and R. Hurel, Henri Lehmann, exhib. cat., Muse Carnavalet, Paris, 1983, no. 24.
The drawing is a riccordo executed six years after the picture probably on the commission of the Vicomte de Flavigny. The differences with the picture are minor: the sitter is framed in a smaller oval and the background is obliterated. The Carnavalet picture itself is based on a drawing executed by Lehmann on 30 April 1842 of Marie d'Agoult seated in an interior, F. Folliot and R. Hurel, op. cit., no. 25. The present drawing was executed the same year as Ingres' portrait of Marie d'Agoult with her daughter Claire.
Marie de Flavigny (1805-1876) was the daughter of a German banker and was educated in France. In 1827 she married the Comte d'Agoult, but shortly after met musician Frans Liszt and became his official mistress. She held one of the most sought-after Salon in Paris and published novels and essays under the name of Daniel Stern.
Lehmann met the famous couple during his stay in Italy from late 1838 to early 1838. He came to Rome to visit his Professor Ingres, then director of the Acadmie de France, who presented him to the couple. Very quickly a profound friendship began between the painter and Marie d'Agoult. In July 1839 Lehmann stayed at Marie d'Agoult's house in Lucca and painted a portrait of her. Two months earlier Lehmann had finished another portait and again in 1842 Lehmann drew one more, but this time for Franz Liszt to travel with during his numerous concert trips. During his stay in Italy the painter and Marie d'Agoult exchanged letters daily, and when the painter moved back to Paris he rented a flat next to his friend. Lehmann and Marie d'Agoult remained close friends till his marriage in 1851.
