Sophia Loren
Sanford Roth (1906-1962) was an internationally renowned photographer whose work has appeared in many publications including: Time, Life, Look, Fortune, Paris Match, Elle, Der Stern, Harpers Bazaar and Vogue. The photographs of James Dean still appear regularly in books, magazines and other works all over the world. His work has been exhibited at the Museum Of Modern Art, New York, Chicago Art Institute, Los Angeles County Museum Of Art, San Francisco Museum Of Fine Arts, amongst others. Roth, with his wife Beulah, met, entertained and photographed the who's who of post-World War Two Europe and Hollywood. Those photographed included Albert Einstein, Alfred Hitchcock, James Dean (a personal friend), Judy Garland, Joan Crawford, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Audrey Hepburn, Aldous Huxley, Noel Coward, Jimmy Stewart, Louis Armstrong, Paul Newman, Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, Grace Kelly, Danny Kaye, Jack Lemmon, Deborah Kerr, Igor Stravinsky, Sophia Loren, Jean Renoir, John Wayne, Edward G. Robinson, Jean Cocteau, Peter Ustinov, Daryl Zanuck, Colette, Groucho Marx, Tennessee Williams, Ava Gardner, Cary Grant and many others. Roth first met James Dean on the set of Giant and they immediately became friends. Dean often visited the home of Sandy and Beulah and, incidentally, Sanford Roth was in the car behind James Dean when he died. He took the now-famous post-accident photographs. When Sanford Roth died in 1962, his wife Beulah transferred ownership to many of the original photographs to Francesca Robinson Sanchez, granddaughter of Edward G. Robinson. Most recently Sanford Roth original photographs have been auctioned as part of the Hachette collection at the Briest Paris Photo Auction (November, 2004). These photographs are offered for sale without copyright and other reproduction rights. The buyer must apply to the relevant parties to obtain such clearance and consents as may be necessary.
