Lot Essay

A study for the figure of Christopher Colombus in the picture of Christopher Columbus bowing before Isabelle and Ferdinand of Castille (see behind the portait of the painter (Fig. 1), the original photograph attached to the backing). The scene took place in 1486 in Salamanqua, where Columbus was requesting funds to finance his journey to the East. Isabella and Ferdinand asked advice of experts who said the journey was impossible. Nevertheless, Columbus received the funds and left on 3 August.
Madrazo was from a family of Spanish artists. Madrazo lived in France most of his life and died in Versailles.
