Lot Essay

Five other silverpoint drawings, two portraits and a landscape and another study of a beggar, were in the Ames Collection although they were never stamped with the collector's mark because of the difficulty of applying it. Drawings by the artist in this technique are very rare. In 1633 Andries and his elderly brother and fellow artist Jan Both (c. 1615-1652) travelled to France and Italy where Andries is supposed to have drowned in Venice in 1641.
