2° (463 x 364mm). 22 mounted chromolithographic plates, finished by hand, by J.G. Keulemans after Keulemans and H. Leutemann, half-tone and line illustrations. Original pictorial green cloth gilt, upper board with design of cranes blocked in black and white, upper board and spine lettered in gilt, green edges (extremities lightly rubbed and bumped). Provenance: C.S. Barlow (bookplate).

FIRST EDITION, LIMITED TO 170 COPIES. 'A HANDSOME, USEFUL AND BASIC WORK, being one of the two major monographs of the Gruidae' (Mengel). 15 of the species figured were drawn from life in 1872 in the Amsterdam Zoo, by Heinrich Leutemann under the supervision of G.F. Westermann (the zoo's director and founder), who wished to write a monograph on the subject, but died in 1890, before his plan could be carried out. He left the drawings to Blaauw, who commissioned others to complete the volume, and produced 'a fine, systematic treatise beautifully illustrated' (Wood).
