CLOUET, Jean Baptiste Louis, Abbé (1730-c.1790). [WALLMAPS OF THE FOUR CONTINENTS]. Paris and Cadiz: Louis Mondhare, 1782.
The set comprising: Carte d'Amerique, divisees en ses principaux pays; Carte d'Asie divisees en ses principaux Etats; Carte de l'Afrique; Carte d'Europe. 4 hand-coloured engraved wallmaps of the continents of America, Asia, Africa and Europe, each on four sheets, joined and mounted on linen (980 x 1250mm). Each map with titles in French and Spanish, and with decorative surrounds incorporating vignette scenes, for America on the discovery of various parts of America, for Asia biblical scenes, for Africa historical events, and for Europe scenes of coronations. (Some light wear to the America and Africa maps, affecting the margins and Atlantic and Indian Oceans.) Window mounts.
An impressive series of wallmaps by Abbé Clouet, who was a prominent member of the Académie Royale des Sciences de Rouen, and who started publishing geographical atlases such as the Géographie Moderne in the 1780s in collaboration with Mondhare in Paris. From 1776 to the mid-1790s, much of their output was devoted to large wallmaps such as the present set. There appear to have been sets published in 1776, 1782, 1785 and 1788 and a world wallmap appeared in 1785.
