WIT, Frederick de (1630-1706). Nova Orbis Tabula in lucem edita A.F. de Wit. Amsterdam: [c.1670].
Engraved map of the world, hand-coloured in outline (540 x 650mm). Elaborate double-hemisphere world map with decorative borders, corners with vignettes of the four seasons together with south and north polar projections, title in banner at upper margin, verso blank. (One or two small holes, margins lightly stained, clean tear to margin at lower centre-fold.)
This map, de Wit's second of the world, succeeded the 1668 world map (published in his own maritime atlas), and the new decorative version became the standard world map in all de Wit's atlases, many of them issued as composite groups. It was reissued by de Wit in 1680, and copied by Allard (c.1685), Mortier (c.1690), and Loots in 1750. Shirley 451.
