Lot Essay

An alternative attribution to the artist's brother Josephus Augustus Knip (1777-1849) has also been suggested. It is often difficult to distinguish the unsigned works of these two artists, who worked very closely together, possibly even on the same drawings.
The soldiers in the present lot would appear to be from France, who had taken the brothers' hometown of Hertogenbosch, the capital of the province of Noortbrabant, in October 1794. Unlike his elder brother Marten Derk is not known to have travelled abroad to France and Italy.
