Professor Michael Jaff, (verbal communication with the current owner) dated the present painting to circa 1635. Sir Oliver Millar dated it to circa 1641.

A preliminary drawing for this painting is in the British Museum, London, Inv. no. 1850.4.13.128 (see Prof. Horst Vey, Die Ziechnungen Anton Van Dycks, 1962, p. 291, no. 220 (verso), pl. 270-1.

A studio version was bequeathed by Mrs. Hamilton Ogilvy in 1921 to the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.

In a fine contemporary carved giltwood Sunderland frame.
