The panel is branded with the mark of the panelmaker Lambrecht Steens I (active 1608-c.1632). This maker's mark appears on another panel by Lytens, offered at Christie's Amsterdam, May 7, 1997, lot 52.

Formerly known as the Master of the Winter Landscapes, the artist was tentatively identified by Reelick (see P.F.J.J. Reelick, 'Bijdrage tot Identificatie van den Meester der Winterlandschappen. (G. Leytens?)', Oud Holland, LIX, 1942, pp. 74-9). He mistakenly took the panelmaker's mark on the support of a painting to be those of the artist. In 1986, a fully signed work was published by Ursula Hrting (see U. Hrting, Der Meister der Winterlandschaften, der Maler Gysbrecht Leytens, Die Kunst, I, 1988, p. 27, no. 2) thereby confirming the true identity of this artist.

The figures are by Hans Jordaens I.
