A pen and ink drawing of the same composition with slight variations is in the British Museum, attributed by A.E. Popham to a Flemish artist under the influence of Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden, and dated by him to circa 1450-60 (see A.E. Popham, Catalogue of drawings by Dutch and Flemish artists ... in the British Museum, 1932, V, p. 60, no. 3).
When sold in 1962 the present work was attributed to Jan Provost, an attribution made first by M.J. Friedlnder in 1952. Dr. F. Bologna, however, believed it to be by a northern French painter, the Master of the Translation of the Reliquary of Saint Perpetua by comparison with the painting in the Muse Cond, Chantilly.
