Lot Essay

Influenced by Georg Flegel (1566-1638), Wedig was active in Cologne where he became a member of the Guild in 1608. Several of the objects in this painting appear in his other works. He uses the flagon, the wine glass and the pewter plate in a work of larger dimensions in the Muse des Beaux-Arts, Dunkirk, Inv. no. P734, while the roemer and the flagon appear in the signed still life in the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum, Cologne, Inv. no. 3163 (see the catalogue of the exhibition, Georg Flegel, the Kunsthalle, Frankfurt, Dec 18, 1993-Feb. 13, 1994, pp. 261 and 266, nos. 145-6, illustrated pp. 265 and 267, edited by K. Wettengl).
