Lot Essay
Tempesta began one of the most productive periods of his life when he moved to Milan circa 1685, and came under the patronage of Count Borromeo, whose protection and efforts on his behalf resulted in numerous commissions. By comparison with the signed and dated Flight into Egypt of 1696 in the Muse d'Art et d'Histoire, Geneva, and with the Pastoral Scene in the National Gallery, Prague (Inv. no. 0.113), signed and dated 1700, the present painting can be dated to the last decade of the artist's life.
