Lot Essay

Le Corbusier executed the present work in gratitude for the kindness and patience of the present owner in assisting him choose with meticulous care and attention to detail the colours he was to use in the execution of the Secretariat Building and the High Court Building in Pandit Nehru's new capital of Punjab, Chandigarh in India in the 1950s. Recalling the gift of the painting, the present owner has written: 'On occasion he could be quite difficult and quite snappy and I think it was perhaps because of this that he astounded me, at the end of all our work together, by presenting me with the painting, which he had done under our eyes sitting under a hot sun... he presented it to me with much grace.'
